biography
I am a Pennsylvania Licensed Psychologist who specializes in working with individuals that struggle with skin picking, hair pulling, and other BFRBs. I competed TLC’s Virtual Professional Training Institute Certification (VPTI/PTI) and started working with individuals having BFRBs in private practice in 2015. I have been doing this work since that time. Are you feeling ashamed or embarrassed about your skin picking, hair pulling, or other body focused repetitive behaviors? Are you wondering why you can’t control or stop yourself? Is your skin picking, hair pulling or other BFRB keeping you stuck or interfering with you going toward what you want to create in your life? I will work with you to customize your treatment to you, your needs, preferences, and goals. People’s goals for treatment may look very different. For some people with BFRBs, their goal may be to no longer feel so different, isolated, ashamed, and to feel more self-compassionate with themselves about dealing with a BFRB. Others may find that a part of them wants to stop engaging in their BFRB and another part of them finds it impossible to stop. They want to understand themselves and their struggle. Still other people may want to figure out how to minimize the impact their BFRB so they can meet other important goals they have for themselves. Some people want to try to stop completely and some people want to decrease the BFRB behavior. Whatever your goal, we will work to make treatment fit you like a well-tailored suit. Treatment can also include other goals and challenges (not just your BFRB) if this is of interest to you. When I work with individuals having BFRBs, I use an integrative approach to treatment that incorporates third wave cognitive behavioral approaches such as Integrative Behavioral Therapy (IBT), Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment (ComB), Habit Rehearsal Training (HRT), CBT, DBT and ACT as well as humanistic, expressive, and other approaches as indicated. What particular approaches we use will be based on your needs, preferences, goals, and what has and has not worked for you in the past. In addition to being a psychologist who has specialized in working with individuals having BFRBs, I also am a National Board Certified Occupational Therapist and a Highly Sensitive (HSP)-Knowledgeable Therapist. My skills and training as an occupational therapist enhance my ability to understand and address sensory modulation concerns in treatment, which is one of multiple variables that can impact individuals with BFRBs. In addition, research suggests that a number of individuals with BFRBs may also be highly sensitive people (HSPs). If you think this may be true of you, we can explore this in treatment as well as ways to thrive as a highly sensitive person. Lastly, I believe a good working relationship and fit are important in treatment. Together, we’ll explore what matters to you the most and address your concerns. In this process, you can decide if and what changes you want to make. And you can do it at a pace and in ways that fit you best. I would like to offer you a free phone consultation so that we can determine if we are a good therapeutic match. You can contact me by phone or email to set up a time to speak. I make every effort to protect your privacy. Therefore, please let me know if I can identify myself as “Rebecca” and if it is okay to leave a voicemail if necessary.
